Graphic Identities: Visual Identity
This is a project from my Graphics 2 subject where I was invited by the Powerhouse Museum to envision their up and coming ‘Graphic Identities’ exhibition in a creative and stylistic way. I created a style guide which established an elegant but, playful and exciting tone for the exhibition. The focal point of this style guide is the logo featuring 8 rectangles to signify the 8 designers showcased. They are organised in a ‘G’ for ‘Graphic’ and the circle placed above one of the rectangles to form an ‘I’ symbolises ‘Identities’. Accompanied with vibrant colours, playful arrangements, and sleek typography this visual identity speaks truth into the exhibition displayed. This work went on to be displayed in the Powerhouse alongside the ‘Graphic Identities’ exhibition.
Through this style guide you’re invited to unpack a visual identity for the ‘Graphic Identities’ exhibition presented by the Powerhouse Museum. It links all eight designers that are showcased and conveys the 20th century precedents with elegance in a playful and fun tone.

The logo is features eight rectangles to represent the eight ground-breaking designers and are composed in an open octagon with the eighth rectangle positioned so that it forms a ‘G’ for the title ‘Graphic Identities’. Above the strategically placed eighth rectangle there is a dot that in majority of designs will be a dusty orange, however where necessary will become black or white. These two shapes therefore create an ‘i’ which evidently is for the word ‘identities’. The orange stands out around the black rectangles however also fits in with my chosen colour palette.
The bright yet slightly muted palette has a range of different colours all to be used to reinforce the playful and enjoyable visuals. This colour palette is drawn out from all the featured designers work as they range from very neutral/muted colours to vibrant tones. Because of this the range of my palette connects with all the designers works and communicates the fun yet sophisticated nature of all eight designers.

Through my colour palette and shapes established in my logo I have created motifs that are seen throughout all my designs that feature a combination of the shapes and colours in my palette and logo design. I have stuck to only using Galvji and Helvetica Neue for the typography in my designs. This reinforces the elegance and prestige of the designers with such simple and minimalistic typefaces. Through all these elements within the visual identity created it allows for the exhibition to speak of fun, playfulness, and sophistication.
